Salt
this is how champions are made.
this is how hip bones are shattered.
this, this, this,
holy god almighty,
what am i doing?
this is not what my father wanted for me.
this is not what any father wants for his daughter.
this is how champions are made.
this is how integrity, tact, and excuses
are lost.
lost, lost, lost.
chicago is failing to lick my wounds in the way i had hoped it would.
if anything,
salt, salt, salt.

The mark of a good author, is how well their words picture reality. I don't mean how accurately they capture the facts about the world, but rather how well they capture our humanity. When you're reading them you can't help but smile and go "Yessss" in your head (maybe your heart jumps ever so slightly) because they've perfectly articulated a seemingly miniscule tendency, or event, from your own life that you thought was so peculiar and categorically you that nobody else could possibly share it ... A good author brings you into contact with the world. They show you that you're not the first person to feel these things in this way and you certainly won't be the last.
ReplyDeleteYou're a good author, Kendall.
